Diplomatic relations

Gabriel Gafita has been the Romanian Ambassador in Lisbon since the 30th of November 2005. His homolog is Alexandre Maria Lindim, invested in his function on the 7th of December 2005.

The diplomatic relations between Romania and Portugal have a long tradition in time. In 1880, the Portuguese Government admitted the state independency of Romania. The first diplomats in Lisbon and Bucharest signed the documents on the 7th of December 1919 and the 31st of August 1917. The political missions of both countries stopped on the 20th of November 1945 (the Portuguese) and on the 7th of November 1947 (the Romanian). Romania as the first East-European country to reestablish- after the “carnations’ revolution” from the 25th of April 1974-, on the 31st of May 1974, the diplomatic relations with Portugal, transformed in embassies. On the 31st of March 1989, Portugal retired its ambassador from Romania. Then, the Portuguese ambassador in Wien was accredited also for Bucharest. The Portuguese embassy to Romania was reopened in 1993. 

The state chiefs made officials visits in 2000 (in Romania) and in 1991, 1996 and 2003 (In Portugal). The Romanian Prime-Minister went in Portugal with a delegation in 2001, 2002 and 2007, as his Portuguese homolog visited Romania in 1997 and 2004. The Ministers of Foreign Affairs appointed each other in 1995, 2000, 2001 and 2003 (in Romania) and 1991, 1997, 1998, 2000, 2002 and 2003 (in Portugal).
