Gabriel Gafita has been the Romanian Ambassador to the Portuguese Republic since the 30th of November 2005, after one year when he represented the country in Malaysia, where he was also a Diplomat. From 2002 to 2004 he was the Deputy Director General for Europe and North America. Between 1998 and 2002, Gabriel Gafita was the Romanian Ambassador to Canada. Three years (1995-1998) he was the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs: from 1995 to 1997 for Culture, Press, Archives and Romanian Communities Abroad and in 1997-1998 for Bilateral Affairs. In 1991 he joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs which he ruled in 1995, when he was the Head of the Policy Planning Unit of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, after four years of being the First Secretary and Counselors at the Romanian Embassy in London, Great Britain. From 1990 to 1991 Gabriel Gafita was the Government expert for national minority issues with the Policy Planning Unit of the Government of Romania. Between 1971 and 1995 he published five fiction works- one collection of short stories and four novels- as well as 15 translations from English, French and German into Romanian. Two of his novels have been translated and published in several other countries. From 1977 to 1990 he worked as an editor for the publishing house of the national minorities of Romania “Kriterion”. Between 1975 and 1977 he started his career as a freelance journalist for Radio Romania and several literary magazines.
